When an un-fortunate life makes Art

If anyone reading this remembers THE ROCKETEER, there was a very scarey villian that broke peoples backs. The make-up used on that actor was copied from a real person! Rondo Hatten developed acromegaly, a slowly progressive deforming of bones in the head, hands and feet. This gave Rondo a monsterous appearance. Universal pictures used his "Look" to great advantage in several films. One of his best roles was that of the CREEPER in the Basil Rathbone, Sherlock Holmes film THE PEARL OF DEATH (1944). His best role in my opinion was THE BRUTE MAN (1946). Originally made by Universal, it was sold to PRC. It was also his last film role. He died of a heart attack at age 52.

The Big Guy in Blue and Red is 70!

2008 marks the 70th B-day of this iconic figure. But way back in 1941, Superman first flew in a series of very expensive cartoons made by the Fleischer Brothers. So unique in their execution, that the first in this series of 17 masterpieces, titled THE MAD SCIENTIST was nominated for an Academy Award for best short subject, cartoon. It (Never should have)lost to a Walt Disney cartoon LEND A PAW.
Here is the poster that the theatres simply replaced the title of the cartoon each month in the white space.

Even a Man Who is Pure at Heart.....

Lon Chaney Jr. found fame and eventually lost the "Jr." thanks to this Universal creation. It is somewhat daunting to see Claude Rains as Lon's Dad in this film. Lon towers over him! Makes one wonder what his Mom looked like!
And can anyone guess the name of the actor who put the bite on Lawrence Talbot to turn his world upside down?...........Yes, Bela (as in Lugosi) the Gypsy! Here is the insert. Pretty, huh?

The Paramount Swan Song for the Brothers

It is truly hard to believe that the Marx Brothers were booted from Paramount after having starred in what is now considered an all time classic. DUCK SOUP (1933) has all of the trimmings of a great comedy. NO romantic sub-plot to interfere with the laughs. NO annoying co-stars that ad nothing to the story. And a hilarious supporting cast of character actors that enhance the film like icing on the comedic cake. Who can forget Edger Kennedy having a lemonade/peanut confrontation with Harpo & Chico?. How about the Groucho/Harpo Mirror scene!?

This was also the last time that Zeppo would appear.....not a real loss. This is the great lobby card title card style B.

Charlie Chan Returns!

With the un-timely passing of Warner Oland, a new Charlie Chan was sought. Into the series stepped Sidney Toler. He did a superb job. And now, Vol. 4 of CHARLIE CHAN has been released. Beautifully restored on DVD. This marks the beginning of one of the best actors to portray the character. Buy It. Watch it. LOVE it.

Here is one of the best of the insert designs to this gangster filled mystery classic.

Another Karloff Rarity

Here is the companion piece to the one sheet art I posted earlier. The Very Busy (But packs a visual punch) title card.
